We spend a lot of time at work so it makes sense that the office design should be as comfortable and inviting as possible. After all, people will do their best work when they enjoy their surroundings. In addition to attractive furnishings, it can be helpful to bring nature inside. Incorporating natural elements makes the atmosphere more warm and friendly – quite the opposite of a cold, austere setting. When employees feel better and like where they work, they will be more productive and feel more satisfied in their positions. Here are three ways you can incorporate nature into your office:
Let there be light
While it’s true that not every employee can have the corner office, hopefully, they can spend some time at work near a window. It seems like a small thing, but it really has an impact on productivity and overall health. Plus, to encourage creative thinking, there needs to be a little daydreaming involved, and looking out the window can help bring ideas to life.
If you are not in the market for an office remodel, try to rethink the space and situate employees, so they have a view of the outside at some point in their day. Optimize natural light by removing any heavy curtains. Blinds are a good option as long as employees can open them to let in the natural light.
Plants
Some employees may have a small plant on their desks, but not everyone has a green thumb. Enhance the entire office space with some greenery. Plants are natural air purifiers. Consider bringing in palms, ferns, philodendrons, pothos, and ivy. Terrariums provide interest and can contain a variety of plants. Flower arrangements are always a welcome addition. But don’t stop there. How about a little outdoor vegetable garden? This has many benefits. Employees can work on it together and share their knowledge about gardening as well as recipes for eating healthy. Plus, it encourages people to go outside, walk around, and get some fresh air on their breaks.
Natural Materials
You might want to add a solid wood desk, table, or bookcase in the reception area. For more impact, you could install a beautiful stone floor and/or counter. And while you are thinking of natural materials, don’t forget water. An aquarium has a soothing effect and can serve as a conversation piece. Other options are indoor water features such as waterfalls. Fountains can be located in common areas or outdoors.
